We know that
small and medium businesses are very important here in Edmonton-Strathcona.
They are also an important component of our national economy, estimated to account for about
98 per cent of all businesses, and employing more than 5 million people in Canada. This represents roughly half of the private sector workforce!
The Conservative federal government continues to play an important role in helping smaller businesses introduce innovations into the marketplace.
In
Budget 2010, our government announced further support for innovation in Canada's small business sector by launching a new Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Innovation Commercialization Program, a two-year pilot initiative. This project will provide an opportunity for small and medium sized businesses to demonstrate the successful application of new concepts on a commercial scale.
Budget 2010 provides $40 million over two years to support up to 20 demonstration projects. This is good news for Canada and good news for us here in Edmonton-Strathcona.
Our MP and the other opposition parties voted against Budget 2010, and therefore against this pilot program.
I am committed to helping our community build on it's foundation as an innovation and entrepreneurialism hub.
I'd love to hear from you about this. Please drop me a line!
