The Conservative Party of Canada and this Conservative government believes the justice system should put the rights of victims and law-abiding citizens ahead of the rights of criminals. Once again we are standing up for the "little guy"; this time it is victims of white collar crime.
Today (May 3, 2010) the federal Minister of Justice announced legislation to establish mandatory jail time for fraud over $1 million, and to help ensure the voices of victims are heard when white collar criminals are sentenced.
The legislation introduced today would stand up for law abiding Canadians by:
- making jail time mandatory for fraud over $1 million. The minimum sentence for such crimes would be two years;
- adding new aggravating factors to toughen sentences. These would include factors such as the impact on the victim, and the magnitude of the fraud;
- requiring judges in all fraud cases to consider demanding offenders make restitution to their victims; and
- allowing affected groups to submit Community Impact Statements to the court.
White collar crime has a devastating impact on individuals and communities. The government of Stephen Harper is taking action to help victims seek restitution, and to ensure that their voices are heard.
