I have been meeting with voters in Edmonton-Strathcona almost daily since last April '09.

At the doors, in coffee shops, in community leagues and in hockey rinks, I have yet to meet one voter who thinks Alberta's vital energy sector (responsible for about 28% of Alberta's GDP)  should be unfairly burdened in order to subsidize under-performing industries in other provinces. Especially now, while our economic recovery is still fragile.

On March 9, the NDP Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Strathcona voted in favour of a Bloc Quebecois motion that calls for the cancellation of tax incentives for oil sands employers in order to pay for forestry bailouts in Quebec.

Here is the text of the amendment:

    Vote No. 2

    40th Parliament, 3rd Session

    Sitting No. 5 - Tuesday, March 09, 2010

    Sponsor:

    Mr. Paillé (Hochelaga)

That the motion be amended by deleting all the words after "That" and substituting the following:

"this House shall not support the government's budgetary policy unless the government eliminates the tax benefits given to the oil industry, thereby enabling it to compensate Quebec for harmonizing the QST and GST, enhance the Employment Insurance Plan, strengthen the Guaranteed Income Supplement and establish a credible assistance plan for the forestry industry, and unless the government abandons the idea of establishing a national securities commission"

Albertans contribute our fair share to Canada, and we are pleased to do it. But this amendment is not right.

The fact that the Bloc proposed it shows that it is wrong for Canada.

The voters in here on the ground tell me that it is also wrong for Edmonton-StrathconaThe fact that an NDP MP from Alberta voted for this amendment shows that she is not in touch with the people she represents.

Edmonton-Strathcona deserves better.
